How to Support your Skin through the Decades, from a Nurse Injector.

WRITTEN BY ABBI SCHUMACHER, NURSE INJECTOR

Loving your skin isn't about chasing trends or turning back the clock, it's about supporting it through every life stage. Our skin changes with us through every season of life. From our early childhood years to our elder years, our bodies go through shifts in lifestyle, hormone fluctuations, weight gain and loss, diet changes, sun/environmental exposure, etc... All of these factors influence how our skin looks and behaves. As one of your aesthetics obsessed besties in a world of "use dial soap as face wash" TikTok's I want to help you with a general idea of how you can support your skin through each life stage, focusing on prevention, correction and maintenance. Follow along as I go through the years, or skip to find where you're at now!

Supporting you in your 20s

The primary focus in your twenties should be prevention and barrier support. In our twenties our skin recovers quickly and collagen production is at its peak, but lasting damage can start or continue to build under the surface from things like sun/UV exposure and acne. The best thing you can do in your twenties is build a foundation of good skincare habits and protect against UV and environmental damage. During this stage I love to stress the importance of daily sunscreen and recommend introducing antioxidants like Vitamin C to your routine. I also recommend finding an aesthetician you can see for medical-grade facials and targeted, personalized skincare recommendations. Some treatments to consider based on common concerns like acne/acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, fine lines include:

  • Microneedling: microneedling is a great "catch all" treatment for your twenties. This can help with acne/acne scarring textural concerns, brightening, and helps prevent and treat fine lines/wrinkles by increasing collagen production.
  • BBL Series - BBL HEROic has an incredible acne treatment protocol that uses blue light to destroy acne causing bacteria. During these treatments we can also address pigmentation & rejuvenate the skin to actually train the cells to act younger.
  • VI Peels - VI Peels are also effective for those struggling with hormonal acne or acne scars, and they have great anti-aging benefits as well.
  • Tox - Towards your mid-to-late twenties, it isn't uncommon to start to notice fine lines. "Preventative" neurotoxin can help relax the muscles to reduce wear and tear of the skin and worsening lines caused by expression.

Supporting you in your 30s

Your thirties tends to be early intervention time focusing on collagen preservation, and tone / texture concerns. Many women are noticing skin changes related to pregnancy, postpartum or other hormonal changes. This can cause concerns like hormonal acne, melasma/hyperpigmentation, dryness and texture. This is a good time to add a retinol into your routine for increased skin cell turnover, and exfoliate regularly for brightening and texture. If we haven't already added something for tone, I love SkinBetter's Even Tone Serums to help treat and prevent hyperpigmentation. Treatments I love in your thirties are:

  • Microneedling: Keep that collagen stimulated, address texture, fine lines and pores.
  • MOXI laser: Great for texture, dryness and melasma.
  • Regular Tox Treatments: prevent wear and tear of the skin, treat fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Sculptra: Stimulate collagen and elastin in the skin to address skin concerns and prevent volume loss over time.

Supporting you in your 40s & 50s

In your forties and into your fifties, you will likely be noticing more apparent structure and volume shifts as well as skin laxity. Here we focus on structural support and firmness as collagen and elastic stores decline more rapidly and skin cell turnover really slows. Many women will also notice a shift in skin texture due to decrease estrogen as they reach perimenopause/menopause. This can cause skin to feel thin, dry and slower to recover. It is important in this phase we continue using SPF, Vitamin C/antioxidants, brighteners, and barrier supporting ingredients. I also love to recommend maybe switching to a stronger retinol and looking at other supportive skincare products like (plated) Intense, Skinceuticals HA Intensifier Multi-Glycan, A.G.E. Interrupter Advanced for deep hydration, volume and elasticity support. Treatments we are doing a lot of at this stage:

  • Microneedling with PRP/PDGF - added boost of collagen & elastin for tightening and texture.
  • BBL/Moxi - Addresses tone and texture while providing many anti-aging benefits.
  • Filler - to replace bone/fat/volume loss.
  • Sculptra - skin booster and volume support.
  • Tox - it is important to continue regular tox treatments, and consider lower face if we are not already treating it!

Supporting you in your 60s and beyond

In your sixties and beyond, you will have an increase in thinning of the skin, volume loss and sensitivity. In this stage we want to focus on comfort, confidence and maintenance. It is important to continue a supportive skincare routine and increase hydration/lipids in order to support thin, dry skin. Depending on goals, we may recommend plastic surgery consultations and discussing realistic expecatations when it comes to injectable treatments, especially if you're new to aesthetic treatments. We will focus on continuing to support volume loss and elasticity using treatments like:

  • Skin Boosters like Skinvive, Redensity, Sculptra, and PDGF.
  • Filler
  • Moxi/BBL
  • Neurotoxin
  • RadioFrequency

In conclusion...

In conclusion, all of these suggestions are based on common concerns that we see here in clinic, but don't forget that each patient's goals vary from person to person. A consultation is the best way to get a plan established and to achieve the goals you're desiring! Feel free to schedule online or give us a call! 920-600-8607.
