Nighttime Skincare: How to Wake Up Glowing
Written by Abbi Schumacher, Nurse Injector
I have good news for the morning haters like me: your skin does its best work over night. During your rest hours in the dark your skin is repairing, turning over new cells, rebuilding collagen, and recovering from the damage of the day. Your nighttime skincare is important for this reason, and also a great opportunity to give your skin the love it needs. If you’re anything like me, mornings are tough, so let’s talk about how to build a nighttime skincare routine that will have you waking up glowing.
Step 1: Double Cleanse.
Yes, I’m a believer in double cleansing. Even if you’re dry. Even if you’re not acne prone. Even if you don’t wear makeup. This doesn’t have to be two separate cleansers or multiple products..it needs to be a removal of SPF, dirt/oil, and makeup followed by an actual cleanse. I typically use a micellar water as my first cleanse to remove the day before going in with a gel cleanser. A clean base is essential to not wasting your money on the next steps.
Step 2: Treat.
This is where we have to get a little strategic, and maybe a little intuitive, but it’s also where real change can come into play. Some active ingredients have an advantage to work better at night time when not competing with or degrading from UV exposure, free radical damage, pollution, and other elements. It’s not about layering on as many active ingredients as you can — but understanding what your skin needs based on it’s current state and your goals. Is your skin looking dull and dry? Maybe we should exfoliate tonight. Is your skin looking red, angry, and inflamed? Maybe we should skip the retinol tonight and focus on repair. Is your skin looking congested and extra oily? Let’s try a clay mask.
Step 3: Hydrate, Moisturize & Repair.
This step is often basic and boring, but imperative to achieve that morning glow. A good moisturizer will do all of the above (hydrate, moisturize and repair) in one easy step. As mentioned before, your skin recovers and repairs at night, so sealing everything in with a good hydrator or moisturizer is key for waking up with happy, healthy, glowing skin.
As always, consistency is key! I made this blog post generic on purpose. With literally millions of products on the market, and constant ads in our faces about the endless options of toners, serums, lotions and potions I think its important to go back to the basics and think about skincare in 3 easy steps. You don’t need more products, you need the right products for your skin. If you need help finding the right routine for you — Katy, Sarah and I are always happy to help you choose from the products we know and adore. You can schedule a consultation, ask at your next appointment, or pop in the boutique during our open hours to look at the products we carry & ask any quick questions you have.
