It’s no secret that weight loss amongst adults is sharply rising, largely driven by the popularity of GLP-1 receptor agonists like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound. And we LOVE this for us! While these medications have contributed to a measurable drop in U.S. obesity rates, using GLP-1 medication can lead to more rapid or significant weight loss than traditional methods which can contribute to noticeable changes in the face and skin. I.e. what some may refer to as “Ozempic face.”
Losing a significant amount of weight can transform health, confidence, and overall well-being. However, many are surprised that while they feel lighter and healthier, their face may appear more tired, hollow, or dare I say it, older.
The Changes
Natural fat pads are located in various parts of the face. I like to call the fat in our face “good fat.” These fat pads support the skin and provide the face with volume, structure and contour. These fat pads are strategically located throughout the face, including the cheeks (midface support), temples, under-eyes, jawline, and perioral (around the mouth).
When weight is lost rapidly, the fat pads can deflate unevenly. This volume loss can result in hollow cheeks, increased shadowing, and a more fatigued appearance. While natural volume loss occurs in the cheeks as we age, losing a significant amount quickly can accelerate this process.
Additionally, skin tissue grows and stretches to accommodate the tissues beneath it. When volume is lost below the skin, the skin tissue itself often can’t “bounce back” enough to adhere to the new contour. This leaves excess skin feeling saggy or droopy.
This is why some patients feel they look “tired” after weight loss, even when they’re healthier than ever. Patients who lose weight quickly, including those using GLP-1 medications, may notice these changes more abruptly. Rapid fat loss allows less time for the skin and underlying structures to adapt, making facial volume loss appear more pronounced.
