Why Medical Grade Skincare Works Faster
One of the questions I get asked all the time is, "Why is medical grade skincare so much more expensive?" And “can you recommend something I can pick up at Target?”.
While there are absolutely some great products available at every price point, medical grade skincare is different for a few important reasons: ingredient quality, clinical testing, and formulations designed to create real changes in the skin.
It's Not Just About the Ingredients
When you're trying to improve concerns like pigmentation, redness, acne, or signs of aging, active ingredients are what do the heavy lifting.
But here's the thing: it's not just about whether a product contains vitamin C, retinol, peptides, or growth factors. It's about the quality of those ingredients, how they're formulated, whether they're stable, and whether they can actually get where they need to go in the skin.
Think of it this way. Two products can contain the same ingredient on paper, but that doesn't mean they'll perform the same way.
A great example is SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic. SkinCeuticals spent years researching topical antioxidants and developed a patented vitamin C formulation designed to maximize absorption and effectiveness. Their C E Ferulic contains 15% pure L ascorbic acid along with vitamin E and ferulic acid, a combination that has been extensively studied and shown to help protect against environmental damage while improving the appearance of fine lines, discoloration, and firmness.
And while we're on the topic, let's talk about dupes. I get asked all the time if there are dupes for my favorite products. Sometimes there are products that contain similar ingredients, but ingredients lists only tell part of the story. A dupe may look similar on paper, but that doesn't mean it's formulated the same way, tested the same way, or performs the same way. Long story short: Could a dupe work? Sure. But it’s not as simple as having the same ingredients list or two brands being owned by the same umbrella company.
SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic is one of the most duped products in skincare. But it’s important to keep in mind, you're not just paying for vitamin C. You're paying for years of research, patented technology, stability testing, and clinical studies that support the product's performance.
That doesn't mean every expensive product is automatically better, and it certainly doesn't mean you can't have a great skincare routine on a budget. But when patients tell me they tried a dupe and didn't get the same results, there's usually a reason. The formula behind the ingredient matters just as much as the ingredient itself.
Medical grade skincare isn't necessarily about cranking active ingredients to the highest possible percentage. In fact, stronger isn't always better. It's about using ingredients that are backed by research and formulated in a way that allows them to actually perform.
Clinical Testing Matters
Let's be honest. Anyone can make a skincare claim. What matters is whether a company can back it up.
One of the reasons I love brands like SkinCeuticals and Skinbetter Science is that they invest heavily in clinical testing. Instead of relying on trendy ingredients and flashy marketing, they put their products through studies to evaluate how they perform on real skin.
Skinbetter has a large portfolio of clinical studies evaluating concerns like photoaging, pigmentation, hydration, redness, and overall skin quality.
And if you've ever sat in my treatment room, you've probably heard me talk about AlphaRet because it is hands down my favorite retinoid product. Skinbetter developed a patented technology that combines a retinoid with lactic acid to deliver impressive results while being gentler than many traditional retinol products. Clinical studies showed visible improvement in signs of aging with less irritation than you might expect from a retinoid.
In a world where every product claims to be the next miracle, I appreciate brands that bring receipts.
Why Medical Grade Skincare Works Faster
The short answer? Better formulations. Better research. Better delivery systems.
When active ingredients are stable, well formulated, and supported by clinical testing, the skin is often able to respond more efficiently. That means you may see improvements sooner than you would with products that are relying more on marketing than science.
Now, does that mean you'll wake up tomorrow with glass skin? Unfortunately, no. Healthy skin still requires consistency. But when you're using products that have been thoughtfully developed and clinically tested, you're giving yourself a clearer path to your goal.
At the end of the day, skincare doesn't have to be complicated. You don't need 15 products. You don't need to chase every trend on TikTok. You just need a plan, the right products, and a little consistency.
Your skin will do the rest!
